“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him.” John 4:23
Once, when I was a young girl of thirteen, I arrived early for Confirmation class. To my surprise, the church was open, but no one was around. Never having been in the church by myself before, I got curious and entered the sanctuary. It just so happened that, at a certain time of year, at a certain time of day, the sun shone in from the Rose window and illuminated the cross on the altar. That day was just such a time and just such a day. I was overcome with a sense of God’s presence and of God’s love for me. I knelt on the carpeted stair leading to the altar, amid the shining dust particles, and made the sign of the cross, not something I had ever done before. I was moved to tears at the powerful love of God I not only felt, but received in that moment. Ever since, worship has been powerful for me, not just something to do, but an experience of, not only my love for God, but God’s love for me.
As your pastor let me say to you, nothing that we do for our faith is more important than worshiping God. Just as when you open scripture you are saying, “Speak to me, God!” when you come to worship you are saying, “You are my God! Move in my life!”
